(From this article one would assume that the State of Jefferson was named for Jefferson Davis which, it is not. It is named for Thomas Jefferson as described in the articles from the Siskiyou News. The newspaper put out a contest for a name. The winner was Jefferson and here are the reasons for choosing Jefferson.
