49th State is ‘Promised’ Land

Asked what he thought about the name of Jefferson for the 49th State, Mayor Gilbert Gable of Port Orford, who started it all, declared Sunday while attending a pow-wow of secessionists at the Yreka Inn that "it suits me because of its independence aspects.

"However, I feel that we should have selected a name that gives the ‘promised land’ impression,’ he slyly added. "We have been ‘promised’ so much – received so little."
