There is no better time than now to begin again the process of statehood. With what the State of Jefferson can offer far excides the benefits of belonging to the two states we are now presently trapped in. Taxes can be significantly lowered; property rights can be given back to the people of Southern Oregon and Northern California. With fuel prices going up, food prices going up, electrical power going up because of a poorly managed PUC, we are now in an slow downward spiral to mass unemployment and government sponsored senior abuse.

The lumber industry is all but gone because of environmentalists that have no concern over the condition of the people of this region. The water rights issues now going on in Siskiyou County should not be an issue. In this case the Federal government and local ranchers are the only one involved. Siskiyou County has over 60% of the water rights but has no input into these meetings. This tells use that the people of this county and others that depend on our water are not important. During droughts in the State of California everyone suffers except the LA basin. I have seen a river of fresh drinking water running from cannels into the ocean and no one in the LA basin stops watering their lawns and all the fountains are going.

The resent tax incentive will not meet the expectations of the government, nor will it help the people of this region for more than a few short months. Taxes on fuel are normally based on simple gallons of use in the state, however they don't take into consideration people with lower incomes tend to commute more that others. Fuel used for heating is also a problem. In most of the State of California there is access to the cheaper natural gas. Although the gas lines are less that 150 miles away and controlled by our energy provider, we do not have access to this resource.

Due to the fact that poor people live were they can afford to not necessarily close to their work places the impact on them is considerable. The State of California also does not take into consideration the energy needs of farmers or ranchers. By forming our own state we can take all these issues into consideration prior to razing any tax.

The Constitution gives us the right to alter our government as we need to, as long as it is to protect our safety and security. Normally this is done every 4 years through the election of our state and national leadership. However, at this time, the States of California and Oregon are not meeting those needs, and by LAW we have a right to change our political situation.

I am a retired government employee that has experience in holding meetings, conducting risk assessments, lecturing at government conferences and writing plans and proposals on a government level. If you could use some help let me know.

I was Born & raised in Crescent City and still own a home there. I'm a 22 year veteran of the USAF I lived in Yreka from Aug 01 - May 03 where I first heard of the "State of Jefferson". I found it to be not just a noble cause, it is a cause that is just plain right. The demographics of the areas that make up the State of Jefferson are so fundamentally different than the rest of the states of CA and Or. I am surprised this has not been implemented by our federal government decades ago.

I am afraid to bring kids into this world for fear of them never being allowed to think for themselves!!  Something like this movement NEEDS to happen if we stand any chance of taking back this country!!

I've owned land in Modoc since 1999 up in California Pines. I love that place and go there when I can to enjoy the area. I have a nice piece of property here in El Dorado, County, CA, my primary home, but I always think that Modoc someday is where I'll end up and with the way California is going, someday is going to come. I fully support this effort and glad to have found out about it reading the Sunday, Oct 5, 2008 SF Chronicle. I had a "Jefferson state of mind" even before I knew about it, so to read that there was actually such an idea warmed my heart and seeing how things are going in California and the USA of late, it's greatly appreciated.
